Worth to explore...

Why Switchfoot won’t sing Christian songs

Lead singer Jon Foreman was asked if Switchfoot is a “Christian” band. His response is worth pondering.
Switchfoot is going secular. Sort of.
“To be honest, this question grieves me because I feel that it represents a much bigger issue than simply a couple SF tunes. In true Socratic form, let me ask you a few questions: Does Lewis or Tolkien mention Christ in any of their fictional series? Are Bach’s sonata’s Christian? What is more Christ-like, feeding the poor, making furniture, cleaning bathrooms, or painting a sunset? There is a schism between the sacred and the secular in all of our modern minds.
The view that a pastor is more ‘Christian’ than a girls volleyball coach is flawed and heretical. The stance that a worship leader is more spiritual than a janitor is condescending and flawed. These different callings and purposes further demonstrate God’s sovereignty.
Many songs are worthy of being written. Switchfoot will write some, Keith Green, Bach, and perhaps yourself have written others. Some of these songs are about redemption, others about the sunrise, others about nothing in particular: written for the simple joy of music.
None of these songs has been born again, and to that end there is no such thing as Christian music. No. Christ didn’t come and die for my songs, he came for me. Yes. My songs are a part of my life. But judging from scripture I can only conclude that our God is much more interested in how I treat the poor and the broken and the hungry than the personal pronouns I use when I sing. I am a believer. Many of these songs talk about this belief. An obligation to say this or do that does not sound like the glorious freedom that Christ died to afford me.
I do have an obligation, however, a debt that cannot be settled by my lyrical decisions. My life will be judged by my obedience, not my ability to confine my lyrics to this box or that.
We all have a different calling; Switchfoot is trying to be obedient to who we are called to be. We’re not trying to be Audio A or U2 or POD or Bach: we’re trying to be Switchfoot. You see, a song that has the words: ‘Jesus Christ’ is no more or less ‘Christian’ than an instrumental piece. (I’ve heard lots of people say Jesus Christ and they weren’t talking about their redeemer.) You see, Jesus didn’t die for any of my tunes. So there is no hierarchy of life or songs or occupation only obedience. We have a call to take up our cross and follow. We can be sure that these roads will be different for all of us. Just as you have one body and every part has a different function, so in Christ we who are many form one body and each of us belongs to all the others. Please be slow to judge ‘brothers’ who have a different calling.”

Foreman mentions the Christian “box” that many people want to stay in, and put others in. I agree with Foreman that this box is particularly limiting when it comes to art. So go out and create something – something beautiful, something wonderful – and do it to the glory of God.

So funny,. But. at the same time, oh so true.

I have to choose again and again NOT to live a life of dullness and risk avoiding behavior. And as much I experienced so far in my small attempts...
Living by following God is worth the world and beyond!

The true value of worship

Darlene Zschech appoints the exact things I have been learning during my time in DTS last year and being on outreach in London. I am even more longing to grow in this intimate relationship with the Lord.

watch the whole series on `The heart of worship´ starting here

Living by vallues makes you live out your visions

This piece is quite helpful for me thinking about by what values I should live. Having done a DTS in YWAM I learned how great it is to live out these vallues. It is not about me living out certain values. Essentially it is reaching out to God and reaching out from this relationship to people around me.

Documentary Father of Lights

This documentary is part of a series of documentaries about God´s wonders in today´s world, made by Darren Wilson, Wanderlust Productions.

I got to see this documentary when we were om outreach in Kathmandu, Nepal at the house of a lovely American lady who moved to Kathmandu to bring the living light of the message of Jesus in the lives of the people of Kathmandu.

This first time I watched this documentary I cried.
  • I cried because it was one those precious moments I saw a glimpse of Gods Father heart for his wandering children.
  • I cried because I realized how often I missed representing my Father and His unconditional love for everyone.
  • I cried because I was stocked about Him doing wonders anyway, everywhere in the world
  • I cried because I was part of the apathy towards the world in the so called western church seeing we are called to do so much greater things
  • I cried because I wanted to get rid of my apathy and longed to be part of Gods work in bringing His hope to the world so badly
Just watch with an open heart. And share His radical love.

How the Holy Spirit works in everyone

The following story from a friend who has been a Christian for app. one year! In her Christian childhood she reflects to me how to believe and live as a child of God. Lately she posted this story on her facebook. With her permission I am glad to share it with you.
Praise The Lord with me- my step dad has been a tough nut to crack but I have persisted in prayer and just living a godly life in his home for only 3 months.
He became violent with me a few weeks ago and I thought I was going to have to move out- but little did I know what was going on under the surface of his pride and defensiveness.
He shared yesterday that a few moments after he punched walls and yelled and screamed at me and came toward me to hit me and my brother jumped up in time - and I ran to my room and got in my knees and said "God I forgive him please have mercy on him" and he came to my room and broke down crying-
I didn't know until he told me yesterday that moments after I prayed he was filled with the Holy Spirit and said he felt compassion for the first time in his life and that it continued from that day. But it's taken him a while to admit to me that he has been talking to God a lot since then asking questions about his first 8 years as an orphan in Sri Lanka and his subsequent adoption. He said god has been answering these questions and this morning he asked me "Amy, why does God do anything good for me? I am a bad person" and I said "yeah me too. I was the worst but how Good is he?" And we talked about the apostle Paul. He said I have taught him how to listen and to have compassion and to turn to God when stressed and to appreciate people for who they are flaws and all.
I want to encourage any of you who feel like people in your life aren't hearing or seeing how good Jesus is because their words and actions seem the opposite: don't give up, keep praying and don't react to their negativity.
Often when people are sensing the Holy Spirit when they are around you it is stirring up all their spiritual garbage and its starting to surface and confront them. And they react in a whole range of ways (yelling, defending, rubbishing your faith, or dumping their problems verbally on you)
Keep showing mercy and compassion and God will speak to them :)

Einstein on science and faith

Professor : You are a Christian, aren’t you, son ?

Student : Yes, sir.
Professor: So, you believe in GOD ?
Student : Absolutely, sir.
Professor : Is GOD good ?
Student : Sure.
Professor: Is GOD all powerful ?
Student : Yes.
Professor: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to GOD to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But GOD didn’t. How is this GOD good then? Hmm?
(Student was silent.)
Professor: You can’t answer, can you ? Let’s start again, young fella. Is GOD good?
Student : Yes.
Professor: Is satan good ?
Student : No.
Professor: Where does satan come from ?
Student : From … GOD …
Professor: That’s right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?
Student : Yes.
Professor: Evil is everywhere, isn’t it ? And GOD did make everything. Correct?
Student : Yes.
Professor: So who created evil ?
(Student did not answer.)
Professor: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don’t they?
Student : Yes, sir.Professor: So, who created them ?
(Student had no answer.)
Professor: Science says you have 5 Senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son, have you ever seen GOD?
Student : No, sir.
Professor: Tell us if you have ever heard your GOD?
Student : No , sir.
Professor: Have you ever felt your GOD, tasted your GOD, smelt your GOD? Have you ever had any sensory perception of GOD for that matter?
Student : No, sir. I’m afraid I haven’t.
Professor: Yet you still believe in Him?
Student : Yes.
Professor : According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says your GOD doesn’t exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student : Nothing. I only have my faith.
Professor: Yes, faith. And that is the problem Science has.
Student : Professor, is there such a thing as heat?
Professor: Yes.
Student : And is there such a thing as cold?
Professor: Yes.
Student : No, sir. There isn’t.
(The lecture theater became very quiet with this turn of events.)
Student : Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.
(There was pin-drop silence in the lecture theater.)
Student : What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?
Professor: Yes. What is night if there isn’t darkness?
Student : You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light. But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and its called darkness, isn’t it? In reality, darkness isn’t. If it is, well you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?
Professor: So what is the point you are making, young man ?
Student : Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.
Professor: Flawed ? Can you explain how?
Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Professor: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.

Student : Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shook his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument was going.)

Student : Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor. Are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?

(The class was in uproar.)

Student : Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain?

(The class broke out into laughter. )

Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?

(The room was silent. The Professor stared at the student, his face unfathomable.)

Professor: I guess you’ll have to take them on faith, son.

Student : That is it sir … Exactly ! The link between man & GOD is FAITH. That is all that keeps things alive and moving.

P.S.

I believe you have enjoyed the conversation. And if so, you’ll probably want your friends / colleagues to enjoy the same, won’t you?

Forward this to increase their knowledge … or FAITH.

By the way, that student was EINSTEIN.

Student : Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good GOD and a bad GOD. You are viewing the concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, Science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing.

The Abandoning by Love And Death

Parental advisory! Not for little kids!

Wake up sleepy
Wide awake!

I am the walking dead
I am death's best friend
I create disaster
I'm the master killing me
There's no innocence
There's only pain I'm empty

Master master save me
Master master kill me
Don't give up on me now
'Cause that's what I've already done
My body's breaking down
I feel my mind getting numb

Why do I hurt myself?
Why can't I escape this hell?
I am always blaming
Always chasing broken dreams
I keep screaming out but no one ever hears me

Master master save me
Master master kill me
Don't give up on me now
'Cause that's what I've already done
[- From: http://www.elyrics.net -]
My body's breaking down
I feel my mind getting numb
Bleeding from my disconnection
Lost inside myself
Forsaken by my own reflection
Abandoning myself

I'm wide awake!
(On myself)
I'm wide awake!
Give up give up
(On myself)
Give up give up
I'm wide awake
Save me!

Master master save me
Master master kill me
Don't give up on me now
'Cause that's what I've already done
My body's breaking down
I feel my mind getting numb
Bleeding from my disconnection
Lost inside myself
Forsaken by my own reflection
Abandoning myself

No!
I'm wide awake!
